FOLK GROUPS THAT PARTICIPATE IN GROUNDHOG DAY

Participation in Groundhog Day is diverse and involves various folk groups, including both local communities and visitors who engage in the festivities. This form of folklore is a fun and entertaining break from the pressures of daily life for those who participate. It has been noted that “rituals can soothe anxiety and reduce stress levels”, making Groundhog Day a perfect holiday for those who want to relax and enjoy themselves (Powell 2017, 261).

Local residents of Punxsutawney, PA often form the core audience at Gobbler's Knob, participate in the events, and contribute to the overall communal atmosphere (Beaulne 2002, 83). Groundhog Day also attracts a significant number of tourists and visitors from across the United States and even internationally. These groups come to Punxsutawney to witness the event, take part in the festivities, and experience the cultural tradition.

One of the most important folk groups that participate in Groundhog Day is the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club Inner Circle. This group is responsible for taking care of Punxsutawney Phil and organizing the Groundhog Day events in Punxsutawney. They wear distinctive attire and perform ceremonial duties, including the proclamation of Phil's prediction (Potter 2008, 17).

Together, these groups make up the heart of Groundhog Day. This holiday offers participants a distraction from stress via ritual, which has been proven to be an effective means of boosting emotions (Powell 2017, 262).
