FEBRUARY 2ND

GROUNDHOG DAY

Abstract

To understand Groundhog Day as a form of contemporary folklore, it is necessary to examine its origins, evolution, and enduring practice in American society. Groundhog Day can be traced back to ancient European folklore brought to the United States by German settlers and has since become a widely celebrated annual event in Punxatawney, Pennsylvania. Various rituals and narratives surround the holiday and its most important participant, the groundhog Punxatawney Phil. The interplay between verbal, material, and customary folklore illustrates how Groundhog Day has persisted across centuries to shape identities and preserve the connection between humanity and nature.
